Dr Guy Burroughes is the Robotics Lead in the AI & Robotics Institute at EIT. He focuses on bringing AI and robotics into real-world use across diverse fields, from autonomous laboratories to field-deployed systems, addressing the full stack of embedded AI, perception, control, and hardware engineering required to deliver reliable physical systems.
Before EIT, Guy was VP of Engineering for Robotics and Simulation at BEAM, where he led development of subsea robots and smart sensing for inspection of offshore wind farms. Earlier, he served as Head of Technology at a national laboratory that is part of the UK Atomic Energy Authority, accelerating the use of robotics and AI in nuclear decommissioning. He started his career developing control systems for robots that maintain fusion reactors.
He is a robotics software engineer by training, with a Master’s in Mathematics and Physics and a PhD in Space Robotics.
Outside work, Guy is a hobby magpie, with interests ranging from growing his own fruit and vegetables to fine woodworking. He also volunteers as a wildlife medic, with experiences spanning everything from hand-rearing orphaned hedgehogs to freeing fallow deer caught in netting.
