Feeding the world’s growing population in the face of climate change by enabling every farm on earth to produce more food with fewer resources and less land.

Group Leader Nitrogen Fixation

Jacques Bouvier

Jacques is Group Leader at EIT, where his core research focuses on engineering nitrogen fixation in crops to improve the sustainability and productivity of agriculture.

‍
Before joining us, Jacques held the position of Junior Research Fellow at Trinity College, Oxford, where he remains an honorary member. He also previously completed his DPhil at the University of Oxford as the Lorna Casselton Memorial Scholar in Plant Sciences, has worked as a researcher at the Heinrich Heine University, Düsseldorf, and holds an MSci in Biology from the University of Sheffield.

‍
Throughout his career, Jacques has been broadly interested in understanding the biological basis of enhanced plant productivity. To this end, his past academic work combined evolutionary and experimental approaches to unlock gains in key plant traits of agricultural importance including photosynthesis, resource-use efficiency, and climate resilience. He is author of multiple publications tackling diverse aspects of these scientific challenges and holds a patent describing a novel genetic engineering strategy for crop improvement.

‍
Outside of work, Jacques is an avid fan of Leicester Tigers and enjoys spending time with his nephews and in the outdoors.

Work withJacques Bouvier

The PBI team aims to improve global food production and biosphere health through advances in plant science research. Our work integrates cutting-edge technologies spanning AI and synthetic biology with advanced genome editing to develop climate resilient plants. The goal is to produce more food from less land using fewer resources, such as nitrogen fertilisers. By combining fundamental research with applied innovation, we can accelerate the translation of discoveries into scalable agricultural solutions. In doing so, we lay the foundation for a more resilient and regenerative agricultural future that benefits both people and the planet.

"I'm very excited about EIT because of this vision of attacking the problems end-to-end, starting from research to building a pipeline all the way to a product, to the way to deliver that product. It's a very unique vision and opportunity to be part of this whole cycle of delivery and impact. At EIT, AI researchers work hand-in-hand with domain scientists, ensuring that AI models are developed to address problems of societal value."
