Helena Saunders

Helena is Head of Bioinformatics at the Plant Biology Institute (PBI) at EIT. She builds and leads capabilities that turn complex biological data into actionable insights.

Helena holds a PhD in Computational Biology from the University of Manchester, where she studied plant acclimation. Her career spans entrepreneurial and global enterprise: she built bioinformatics pipelines from the ground up at a synthetic-biology start-up before joining Syngenta, where she headed a bioinformatics platform for crop protection research and development.

Outside work, Helena enjoys time at her family’s farm in the Black Forest, hiking in the mountains and doing puzzles with her toddler.

Work withHelena Saunders

The PBI team aims to improve global food production and biosphere health through advances in plant science research. Our work integrates cutting-edge technologies spanning AI and synthetic biology with advanced genome editing to develop climate resilient plants. The goal is to produce more food from less land using fewer resources, such as nitrogen fertilisers. By combining fundamental research with applied innovation, we can accelerate the translation of discoveries into scalable agricultural solutions. In doing so, we lay the foundation for a more resilient and regenerative agricultural future that benefits both people and the planet.
