Generative Biology Institute

Building a faculty of leading researchers to tackle the key challenges in making biology engineerable and unlock its potential to benefit humanity.

Head of Mass Spectrometry

Idi Liko

Idi is the Head of Mass Spectrometry GBI, EIT Oxford. His research is centred on advancing mass spectrometry (MS) technologies, with a particular focus on their integration into generative biology and drug discovery. His group is actively developing next-generation MS platforms to interrogate complex biomolecular systems.

Previously, Idi co-founded OMass Therapeutics and served as Senior Director of Technology and CTO. At OMass, he led the development and biotech translation of innovative native MS-based methodologies for drug discovery. His work was instrumental in building the company from inception, guiding its technological strategy, fund raising  and enabling the progression of programs into clinic.

Idi holds a Master’s degree in Chemistry from ETH Zurich and completed his DPhil in Chemistry at the University of Oxford. His academic and industry contributions span the interface of analytical chemistry, structural biology, and translational drug development.

Work withIdi Liko

The GBI team aims to unlock the blueprint of life, enabling the rapid and scalable synthesis of entire genomes with newfound precision. Success would enable the identification and potential creation of DNA sequences that could generate biological systems designed to perform specific functions. These new DNA construction techniques could have a wide range of commercial applications, including designing more efficient crops with higher yields or finding personalised cell therapies and vaccines. Specially engineered cell processes could also support new biodegradable materials to help tackle the problems of climate change.

"I am incredibly fortunate to be part of an organisation that takes a bold, end-to-end approach to tackling global challenges. We're breaking down silos and genuinely embracing transdisciplinary collaboration - which is something I find deeply inspiring. Coming to work daily is a real joy as I’m part of a fantastic team where we work hard and laugh often. What really motivates me is that I get to engage daily with some of the brightest young minds from around the world, journeying with them through their studies in Oxford and their engagement with EIT’s programs."
