Martin Dougherty is the Senior Director, Scientific Operations at EIT. His career spans academic research, commercial enterprise and leadership of major scientific institutions.
Martin began his academic career in tropical medicine, before starting a company in medical communications servicing the pharmaceutical industry. He then went on to lead a healthcare services research group developing evidence-based guidance for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. The specialism was Women’s and Children’s Health and were embedded across the RCPCH and RCOG.
As Chief Executive of the Royal Statistical Society, Martin led a cross-sector professional charity before becoming the first Chief Operating Officer of the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, overseeing its operations and their transition to new research facilities. For more than a decade he served as COO of the Wellcome Sanger Institute and the Genome Campus, with responsibility for corporate, scientific, and commercial services across a large and complex research environment.
Before moving to EIT, Martin was COO at Niab, working with applied research teams and partners to translate crop science into practice.
