Mary is committed to finding solutions at the intersection of pure mathematical techniques with natural sciences and addressing pressing societal issues. She developed her passion for the subject through competitions, winning gold medal at the International Zhautykov Olympiad and bronze at European Girls’ Math Olympiad. Seeking to implement ideas from Olympiad puzzles in a broader context, Mary took an active, hands-on role with Engineering Ecology and Nanotechnology projects, and was selected for programmes such as PROMYS (Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists) Europe and Pioneer Research Institute. Her research paper for Pioneer was centred around the parameter identifiability of Gaussian Mixture Models, a direction she wants to explore further alongside other Machine Learning algorithms.

Mary studies at UWC Pearson and is inspired to see how the values of intercultural collaboration, open-mindedness and service could lead to progress in science.

Outside of academics, Mary enjoys canoeing, dancing, discussing fiction and drinking coffee.
