Alston applies his mathematics expertise to advance research across a range of technological fields. As part of a team, he received an Outstanding Award (top two globally) at the 2025 International Mathematical Modelling Challenge (IMMC) and represented his country as an International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) participant after winning gold at the New Zealand Mathematical Olympiad.
His current interests centre on expanding the reach of mathematics into new domains. He founded the New Zealand Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics (NZOAA), leading the country to participate in the Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad competition for the first time. Academically, he has ranked in the top 0.3% nationally in calculus, geography, and earth and space sciences, placing among the top 13 students in the country.
Beyond his academic work, he enjoys playing the drums and solving Rubik’s cubes.
