Schan Dissanayake-Perera

Schan is a Microfluidics Scientist in the Pathogen Program at EIT. His work focuses on developing automated and miniaturised systems to streamline the complex workflows currently used to prepare patient samples for sequencing.

With an interdisciplinary background, Schan earned his PhD at Imperial College London, where he explored the bio-nano interface for biosensing applications, integrating novel nanomaterials into CRISPR-based diagnostic assays. Before joining EIT, he was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Oxford, where he helped optimise and field-test a range of assay platforms in collaboration with clinicians in the UK and internationally, advancing ultrasensitive and low-cost testing for both infectious and non-communicable diseases. Passionate about science communication, Schan has been actively involved in public outreach, serving as a lead organiser for events such as Pint of Science and the Great Exhibition Road Science Festival in London.

Outside the lab, Schan enjoys playing ultimate frisbee, bouldering, and baking.
