Michael Girling is a Laboratory Technician within the Plant Biology Institute (PBI) at EIT. In his role, he supports core laboratory operations and works closely with research groups to keep experiments running smoothly and efficiently, helping to maintain a collaborative and effective research environment.

Previously, Michael has worked in the Department of Biology at the University of Oxford. As a Research Technician in Tina Schreier’s group, he focused on establishing an efficient transformation protocol in the C4 dicot Gyandropsis gynandra, gaining hands-on experience in plant tissue culture, Agrobacterium‑mediated transformation, plant regeneration, and molecular biology techniques. This role further developed his interest in plant science, which he continues to develop in his current work.

He has a BSc (Hons) in Biology from the University of Gloucestershire and an MSc in Biological Anthropology from University College London (UCL).

Outside work, Michael enjoys walking and hiking outdoors, watching football, and spending time with friends and family. He also runs a science blog where he explains recent research and complex biological topics in clear, accessible language, reflecting his growing interest in science communication and public engagement.
