Dr Virve Enne (Vicky) is a Staff Scientist in Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and Applied Metagenomics within the Applied Sequencing Group for thePathogens Project at EIT. Her work focuses on metagenomic applications and the detection of antimicrobial resistance from genomic and metagenomic data.
Vicky is an experienced microbiologist with a strong commitment to translating cutting-edge science and technology into clinical practice.
She holds a degree in Microbiology from Imperial College London and a PhD from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, where she investigated the persistence of antibiotic resistance. She began her postdoctoral career at the University of Bristol, studying AMR mechanisms and the fitness costs of resistance from a One Health perspective. In 2013, she moved to University College London, followed by a brief appointment at GSTT/KCL, before joining EITin autumn 2025.
Throughout her academic career, Vicky has led interdisciplinary research focused on developing and evaluating novel molecular diagnostic strategies for bacterial infections and AMR. She co-led the NIHR-funded INHALE research programme, which generated significant findings on the implementation and clinical utility of molecular diagnostics for ICU pneumonia. She currently serves as an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at UCL and as an editorial board member for the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy. She has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications.
