Pathogen Program
Senior Scientist - Microfluidics

Issac Michael

Issac Michael is a Senior Scientist in Microfluidics within the Applied Sequencing team in the Pathogen Program at EIT Oxford. He designs miniaturised, automated cartridges and test rigs for metagenomics-based pathogen detection and works to simplify assay automation and platform architecture. His focus on affordability, portability, and scalability helps bring high-performance pathogen detection to wherever it’s needed.

Before joining EIT Oxford, Issac held engineering roles at Oxford Nanopore and Oxford Nanoimaging, focused on microfluidics, micromanufacturing, and life-science instrumentation. He contributed to microfluidic chip and cartridge development, translated benchtop assays into automated systems, and led experimental validation that bridged early-stage research and product development.

Issac holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from UNIST (South Korea) and a master’s degree in Product Design and Nanotechnology. He has authored 20+ academic publications and is an inventor on four international patents.

Outside the lab, Issac enjoys time in nature with his family and hands-on projects—especially DIY experiments with his son.
