"Ensuring that technological progress leads to social progress often requires shifts in regulations, policies and institutions. Whether it be about how the labour market and public finances adapt to AI and Robotics or how health systems adjust to a shift in the disease burden, economics provides analysis of how society can best reap the benefits of scientific progress."

our commitment

Building the economic foundations for a better future

Economics is a powerful tool for impact: it can quantify societal benefit in order to identify the most impactful solutions, set targets and understand trade-offs. It’s also the language of government and business, making it crucial to delivering systems level change.

Our purpose is to help shape a future where bold ideas become innovation, and innovation drives real-world benefit. Our team of economists and experts build the evidence and economic case for transformative solutions through pioneering theory and data-driven insight, creating impact on a worldwide scale.

OUR APPROACH

Shaping, scaling and measuring impact to bring about solutions to societal problems

Economics provides a cross-cutting capability working across scientific programs, commercial opportunites and policy.

Providing quantitative rigour

Developing economic models, indicators and targets to drive and measure their impact, while also ensuring their commercial sustainability.

Building the economic case for transformative change

Our team of economists, policy experts and researchers are working to build the economic case for innovative approaches to the world’s most complex challenges.

Shaping the future of economics

We are building a community at the intersection of research, policy and commercial solutions. Drawing on theory and empirics, and collaborating across a range of intellectual disciplines, we will provide the economics research and training to generate transformative change.

Focus area

Rethinking Health Systems

One of the areas we’ll explore is the policies, institutions and economic thinking needed for a world where we don’t just live longer – but stay healthy for longer by creating a sustainable 21st century health system.

Keeping people healthier for longer

Our challenge is to make healthy life expectancy catch up with overall life expectancy, so people spend more years in good health – not just more years alive. This requires a shift from treatment to prevention, targeting the biological and social drivers of aging.

Supporting economic growth and living standards

The main focus of current health systems is to focus on treating disease. If we are to achieve better health outcomes we need to create meaningful measures of health that reflect individual’s physical and cognitive ability. These should be the target of any health system and they should be matched with knowledge of key underlying biomarkers that produce better health outcomes.

Enabling more fulfilling long lives

Health systems account for an ever-rising proportion of GDP but are not delivering every improving health outcomes. Improving health sector productivity, identifying what drives better health and above all understanding the economic benefits that arise from better health in the context of an aging population are key for understanding how much and where to invest in creating a sustainable 21st century health system.
